Acting IRS chief heads to Ways and Means next week

Werfel’s review is expected to touch on how to ensure that staff involved in the targeting are held accountable, how the sorts of failures that led to the targeting were allowed to happen and a broader look at systemic issues at the IRS.

{mosads}Congressional investigators have already interviewed more than a half-dozen IRS staffers in their inquiry, and transcripts that have been made public suggest that both Washington and Cincinnati officials had a role in the targeting.

The transcripts have not shown any involvement by the White House or top Treasury Department officials. Lawmakers have said they still have questions about why top IRS officials did not report back to Congress about the targeting, and why the targeting at the agency lasted as long as it did.
