Camp, Levin ask IRS for all IRS documents on targeting

“The fact that top level officials in the IRS were aware of this behavior and did nothing to address it is absolutely unacceptable and raises serious questions about the competence of those running this agency.”

The IRS said on Monday that Miller and former Commissioner Doug Shulman found out about the extra scrutiny Tea Party groups were receiving in May 2012.

IRS officials have testified that they did not single out of any specific groups.

“The American people must have the fullest confidence that organizations requesting tax exemption receive completely unbiased treatment from the Internal Revenue Service and are never singled out by name or political views,” Levin said.

“They must also be assured that the IRS will be nothing less than completely forthcoming in the information it provides to Congress.”

The committee has scheduled a hearing for Friday to parse out fresh evidence in addition to what the panel has uncovered from a nearly two-year investigation related to concerns to targeting certain groups.

Camp and Levin detailed exactly what IRS officials should be prepared to tell their committee, including whether or not anyone has been punished for the infractions.

They are asking the IRS to comply with the request by May 21.

The request comes following revelations that employees in the IRS’s Cincinnati office asked Tea Party groups applying for tax exempt status for additional information.

On Monday, President Obama said, if true, the IRS’s conduct was “outrageous.”

The Justice Department launched an investigation, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Tuesday.
