Las Vegas sees snow twice in one week after decade without accumulation

Las Vegas experienced rare snowfall twice this week after going more than 10 years without a recorded accumulation of snow.

{mosads}A light snow Sunday followed by a heavier accumulation of a half inch of snow Wednesday night marked the first times the region has seen any snow since a storm dropped 3.6 inches in December 2008, according to The Associated Press.

Photos of the snow posted on social media showed snow covering yards and driveways, accumulating enough in front of the city’s famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign to allow for the construction of a small snowman in front of the landmark.

The Washington Post reported that the city’s record for snowfall dates back to a one-day maximum of 7.4 inches on Jan. 31, 1979.

The local Clark County School District did not deem the snowfall enough to necessitate school closures, tweeting that the roads were clear enough for safe driving.

“All reports indicate that it is safe to drive on the roads,” the school district tweeted. “We will continue to monitor the weather conditions and keep our families and community up-to-date on any changes. We will determine by mid-day whether to have after-school activities based on weather conditions.”
