Protesters interrupt DNC meeting after ban on fossil fuel money reversed

Protesters briefly interrupted a meeting at the Democratic National Committee’s summer gathering after the party decided to allow donations from the fossil fuel industry and related political action committees.

“We the people are ready to lead because our leaders are making it hard to breath. They care for oil, they care for greed, reject fossil fuel money dare to lead,” the protestors chanted Thursday.

“Cuz you can’t ever take away the people of the world standing here today. Cuz you can never take away the people of the world we are here to stay!” they continued, before being ushered out of the conference hall.

The DNC reversed its ban on taking donations from fossil fuel industry workers and “employers’ political action committees” earlier this month.

The reversal has led environmental groups and supporters of Sen. Ben Sanders (I-Vt.) to urge the DNC in a letter on Thursday to reinstate the ban on donations from the fossil fuel industry. 

“We have been engaging with folks in the labor movement to address their concerns,” DNC Chairman Tom Perez said regarding the reversal.

He continued, “At the same time, we remain committed to the Democratic Party platform, which states unequivocally our support for combating climate change.”
