AAA: Falling gas prices break record

AAA said on Monday that falling U.S. gas prices have set a new record.

{mosads}The auto group said the national average price of gas has fallen for 88 straight days, the longest period of daily declines ever tracked by AAA.

Gasoline prices, which started falling in September, are now below $2.50 a gallon, AAA said.

The average price of gas across the country as of Monday is $2.39, AAA said. It’s the lowest price since 2009. The average price of gas is still above $3.00 in Hawaii and Alaska.

“The current week-over-week drop of 15 cents is the largest such decline in more than six years. Motorists are paying 43 cents less than one month ago and 85 cents less than one year ago to refuel their vehicles,” AAA’s analysis said.

AAA said the low prices at the pump are saving consumers more than $450 million per day on gasoline, which is expected to have a “positive” effect on holiday shopping and travel.
