Green group funnels $4.2M behind Sen. Hagan in NC

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is launching a $4.2 million campaign supporting Sen. Kay Hagan in North Carolina (D) just two weeks before Election Day.

The campaign will consist of TV ads, mail, and one-on-one contact with voters to bolster Hagan’s reelection campaign against Republican candidate Thom Tillis.

{mosads}“Republican Senate nominee Thom Tillis would leave North Carolinians vulnerable to harmful pollution from coal ash ponds, power plants, and other sources of contamination,” said Daniel J. Weiss, senior vice president of campaigns for the LCV.

The $4.2 million effort to help Hagan keep her seat puts $400,000 into TV ads attacking Tillis for his alleged connection to conservative donors Charles and David Koch.

Another $2.2 million will be dedicated to a voter contact effort, the League said on Wednesday, to turn out supporters who voted in the 2012 presidential election but did not vote in the 2010 midterm elections.

The LCV is also putting $1.6 million into mail and digital media, which is an attempt to “preserve the environmental firewall in the Senate,” the green group said.

Republicans have made it clear that if they take control of the Senate after November a number of administration policies aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting climate change would be on the chopping block.

The GOP claims Obama’s climate agenda would eliminate energy jobs and hurt the economy.

Hagan maintains a slim edge in most polls, but it is a neck-and-neck race that Republicans are optimistic they can win.
