Japan turns to nuclear power again

Japan plans to take another crack at nuclear power.

The New York Times reports Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced the details of a draft plan that designates atomic power as an important long-term electricity source.

{mosads}The Basic Energy Plan outlines Japan’s plan to restart reactors that were shuttered after the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. The plan goes against he previous government’s vow to phase out the country’s nuclear power.

Japan’s minister for trade and industry, Toshimitsu Motegi, said Japan is still committed to “reducing its reliance on nuclear power.”

In all, the plan is vague, with little details offered on targets for the amount of nuclear energy the country plans to rely on.
