Cleanup at Japanese nuke plant might take three years

Japan might need to extend its work to decontaminate the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant by up to three years, Bloomberg reports.

Bloomberg cites the Japanese publication Kyodo News, which cited an unidentified government official.

Radiation cleanup in the Fukushima plant was set to be finished by March 31, according to a government plan announced last year.

The delay comes from local opposition to constructing temporary storage facilities, Kyodo News said.

A devastating earthquake and tsunami rocked the nuclear power plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co. Recently, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz visited the plant and vowed continued support of Japanese officials in the cleanup.
