Iran still biggest state sponsor of terror according to new State Department report

According to the State Department’s Country Report that was released Friday, Iran is still the “world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism.”

{mosads}The report says that Tehran spends nearly a billion dollars a year to “support terrorist groups that serve as its proxies and expand its malign influence across the globe.” In particular, the country supports Hezbollah, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Additionally, the country reportedly personally planned terrorist acts in Belgium, France, and Germany earlier this year.

Al Qaeda also continues to survive.

“Despite our sustained efforts since Sept. 11, 2001, and the group’s leadership losses, Al Qaeda’s regional affiliates continue to expand their ranks, plot, and carry out attacks, as well as raise funds and inspire new recruits through social media and virtual technologies,” the State Department said.

However, the State Department’s report highlights that the U.S. was successful combating ISIS.

U.S. and partner forces liberated “nearly all territory ISIS previously held in Iraq and Syria,” resulting in the destruction of the group’s desired “caliphate,” says the report.

The State Department’s report comes six days after ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died after detonating a suicide bomb as U.S. forces raided his northern Syrian compound.
