Two service members die in noncombat-related incidents

Two soldiers died this week in separate noncombat-related incidents while deployed overseas in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the Pentagon revealed Thursday.

First Sgt. Casey Hart, 42, of Baton Rouge, La., died Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., after suffering a medical emergency May 9 at the al-Tanf garrison in Syria, according to a Defense Department statement.

Hart, who had been assigned to the Louisiana Army National Guard 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, also worked as a patrol officer for the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Louisiana’s WAFB television station reported that Hart went into a cardiac arrest while running last month, and he was transferred to a hospital in Germany before he was sent to Walter Reed.

His death is still under investigation.

In a separate incident, a soldier assigned to the Combined Joint Task Force of Operation Inherent Resolve died Thursday from a noncombat-related incident at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

The name of the soldier was not released, pending notification of next of kin, and the incident is under investigation.
