A newly unveiled statue at the Women in Military Service For America Memorial in Arlington, Va. honors women in the military.

“The Pledge,” by sculptor Susan Bahary, shows a woman in a full combat uniform bonding with a service dog.

“It represents their pledge of faithful allegiance to our country and to protect and defend our freedom. There are very few monuments in the US featuring women and fewer yet honoring them for their great military service. The time has come,” Bahary said on her website describing the statue.

“’The Pledge’ captures a brief private moment of mutual respect and love, with duty calling,” Bahary continues in her website statement. “They pledge to support each other, doing the best they can to accomplish their important mission and stay safe.”

The statue was formally unveiled on Saturday.
