US calls emergency meeting of UN nuclear watchdog group to discuss Iran

The United States called an emergency meeting of a United Nations nuclear watchdog group to discuss Iran.

U.S. Ambassador to International Organizations in Vienna Jackie Wolcott requested a special meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors to discuss a report on Iran’s nuclear program, according to a U.S. mission statement

“The international community must hold Iran’s regime accountable,” the statement said.

{mosads}A Monday report by the IAEA, which monitors Iran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement, said that Iran had surpassed the amount of low-enriched uranium it is permitted to stockpile. The confirmation follows similar reports in Iranian state media.

The IAEA told its 35-member nations that the meeting will be held next Wednesday, according to Reuters

Iran’s breach of the deal comes amid escalating tensions with the U.S., which pulled out of the deal last year. Last month, President Trump said that he called off a military strike against Iran that followed the country’s shooting down of an unmanned U.S. drone.
