Pompeo on oil tanker attacks: ‘It’s unmistakable what happened here’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday reiterated the Trump administration’s position that Iran attacked two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, saying it is “unmistakable what happened here.” 

“These were attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran on commercial shipping on the freedom of navigation, with the clear intent to deny transit through the strait,” Pompeo said on “Fox News Sunday.”  

“The intelligence community has lots of data, lots of evidence,” he said. “The American people should rest assured we have high confidence with respect to who conducted these attacks.”

{mosads}Two tankers, reportedly carrying oil to Japan, were damaged in the attack. 

Pompeo later blamed Iran, saying, it was the “assessment of the United States government that the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, however, said his country was not involved and said Pompeo’s allegation is without “a shred of factual or circumstantial evidence.”
