An F-18 military jet crashed close to San Diego, Calif., on Thursday night, the U.S. Marines said in a statement.

“There are no indications of damage to property on the ground. Search and rescue actions are ongoing. An investigation has begun,” the statement said.

The crash occurred near the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar base, located about 15 miles north of downtown San Diego.

Officials with the military base said in the statement that the F/A-18 Hornet crashed east of the station around 11:54 p.m. local time Thursday.

The F-18 was operating out of the military base but was not affiliated with the U.S. Marines 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, the West Coast aviation unit for the military branch.

Officials with the military base said more information would become available as they learn of it.
