President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were heading to “a signing” after their “fantastic meeting,” Trump told reporters Tuesday after emerging from a working lunch at their Singapore summit.
“A really fantastic meeting,” Trump said with Kim at his side. “A lot of progress, really very positive, I think better than anybody could have expected. Top of the line, really good. We’re going right now for a signing.”
The two leaders did not respond to reporters’ questions on what they would be signing.
{mosads}Trump and Kim were holding the first summit between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader at Singapore’s Capella resort.
The summit included a 38-minute one-on-one meeting where only Kim, Trump and their translators were in the room.
That was followed by an expanded meeting with each leader’s advisers, which on the U.S. side include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly and national security adviser John Bolton.
The two delegations then held a working lunch where press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, U.S. Ambassador to the Pilippines Sung Kim and National Security Council Senior Director for Asia Matt Pottinger joined the U.S. team.
Trump aims to get North Korea to commit to complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization, but has said the summit is the start of a process meant for the two leaders to get to know each other.
