Lautenberg was last WWII veteran in Senate

He joined the Army during World War II as a member of the Army
Signal Corps in Europe. After the war, he attended Columbia University under the
G.I. Bill.

Last year, there were three World War II veterans in the Senate,
but the number dropped to one after the late-Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) died in December and Sen.
Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) retired.

There are still two World War II veterans remaining in the House: Reps.
Ralph Hall (R-Texas) and John Dingell (D-Mich.).

This week Dingell will
surpass the late-Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) as the longest-serving lawmaker
in Congress’s history.
