Criticized computer maker’s website hacked

The website for the computer maker recently criticized for preinstalling vulnerable software on its laptops was hacked on Wednesday, the Verge reported.

For roughly 20 minutes on Wednesday afternoon, visitors to Lenovo.com were met with a slideshow of downcast teens, as the song “Breaking Free” from “High School Musical” played in the background.

{mosads}There are indications the hacking collective Lizard Squad is behind the digital defacement, but the group has yet to take credit.

The cyberattack is likely tied to the discovery last week that Lenovo, the world’s largest PC manufacturer, was installing a program called Superfish on its laptops that left the computer at risk of being co-opted by hackers.

The program was allowed to inject ads into users’ Internet browsers, providing a path for hackers to jump in and collect sensitive data from the computer.

The company has since released a tool for users to wipe Superfish totally from their devices and said it will no longer install the software.

The Verge reported there’s no indication the hackers infiltrated Lenovo’s internal network during the cyber offensive.
