A former senior economic official in the Obama and Clinton administrations is calling President Trump’s rationale for tax cuts “a lie.”
Gene Sperling, a former national economic adviser to Presidents Obama and Clinton, pushed back on the GOP tax plan in an interview for The Hill’s Power Politics podcast.
During a half-hour discussion with host Alexis Simendinger, Sperling argued the political calculus for Republicans in 2018 may miss the mark given that majorities of Americans say they are skeptical about GOP tax policies and frown on Republicans’ efforts to repeal ObamaCare.
During the conversation, Sperling argued that Trump’s economic policies are unfair to middle- and lower-income families, contrary to what Republicans are advertising.
Sperling conceded that Democrats could stand to improve their political arguments heading into 2018, while describing it as “soul crushing” to watch Trump jettison policies he helped craft.
