The Dems support for abortion is out of step with the American people
I’d like to extend an invitation from one radical to another. Specifically, I would like to invite Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to attend today’s March for Life.
The March for Life, held in Washington, D.C. on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, is the largest annual human rights gathering in the world. Every year the event attracts hundreds of thousands of overwhelmingly young demonstrators who peacefully protest the industrial scale, for-profit slaughter of the weakest and most vulnerable humans on earth. We gather each year to be their voice, because they quite literally have none.
{mosads}I thought Ocasio-Cortez might be interested because she has positioned herself as a party gadfly and recently called herself a “radical.” In an interview with 60 Minutes she said, “Well, I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country…if that’s what radical means, call me a radical.” The program called her “The Rookie Congresswoman Challenging the Democratic Establishment.”
Here’s a truth: There is nothing the democratic establishment is more dogmatically committed to than abortion. And not just abortion, but abortion. Abortion on demand, without restriction, on taxpayer dime and to borrow from their words, “without apology.”
The Democratic establishment’s zealous support for abortion is both out of step with the American people and self-identified Democrats on the issue. Only one in ten Americans supports unrestricted abortion; only 28 percent believe it should be legal after the first trimester. Most Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
A majority believe it is immoral. And perhaps most interestingly, one in three Democrats self-identifies as pro-life. They are just waiting for someone with the nerve to take on the powers that be.
But it’s hard to oppose the abortion machine when you are beholden to their dollars. Ocasio-Cortez is unique in that her rise was funded almost entirely by small donations and she has tweeted a pledge not to take corporate PAC money.
Her colleagues, by contrast, have their pockets lined by donations from Planned Parenthood’s billion-dollar blood money fortune. Planned Parenthood contributes to their campaigns and in exchange, they promise to protect the half a billion dollars the corporation receives annually in federal funding. It’s a nice little racket they’ve got.
Their OpenSecrets.org PAC page for House campaign contributions in the 2018 cycle is telling: “$464, 010 to federal candidates, (99 percent to Democrats, 0 percent to Republicans).” In other words, it’s a one-party racket. Annually, the abortion chain spends millions on Democrat candidates and ads, enough money apparently, that they help dictate candidates the party will support. They helped (unsuccessfully) oppose pro-life Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.)and party leaders, with big abortion at their backs, increasingly oppose rising candidates who are in any way out of step with the party’s abortion creed.
I have no doubt Ocasio-Cortez is pro-choice, but if she wants to make a truly radical move that would sow anarchy in party leadership, she could question the party’s bondage to a corporate giant that racketeers funds from the American people to oppress the vulnerable. In doing so, she could also open the door for true bipartisanship and new coalitions that could loosen the current bonds of bipartisanship.
In her 60 Minutes interview, Ocasio-Cortez references Abraham Lincoln as another radical. He was and his willingness to break with convention helped to forge an unlikely coalition between abolitionists and business Whigs, a coalition that gave birth to a new party, one that ultimately succeeded in abolishing slavery.
On her Twitter page, Ocasio-Cortez says, “In a modern, moral and wealthy society, no American should be too poor to live.”
If Ocasio-Cortez has the courage to do something truly progressive, she should visit today’s March, where she will find hundreds of thousands of young people dedicated to a similarly radical proposition, that we are all created equal and no American should be deemed to small to live.
