Are the GOP’s chances of winning the Senate rising?
|
S
enate Republicans are seeing their chances of retaking the majority becoming a bit more possible as they grow the battlefield and go after vulnerable Democrats.

Just two years ago, infighting and former President Trump
‘s influence proved to be a ruinous mixture for midterm candidates. The GOP didn’t meet some expectations in tight races, and Democrats grabbed a bigger majority in the upper chamber in 2023, though still narrow.

News out of Maryland and Montana could shift things, though. Popular former Gov. Larry Hogan
(R) eschewed encouragements to run for president and decided instead to run for Senate, taking on the state’s Democratic roots. He’s running to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin.
In Montana, Rep. Matt Rosendale ditched the GOP primary to give Republicans a chance to circle around businessman Tim Sheehy in an effort to unseat Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Tester.
Trump decided to back Sheehy over Rosendale.
“I have long been a supporter of the President, and remain so. But I have been forced to calculate what my chances of success would be with Trump supporting my opponent. This race was already going to be tough, as I was fighting against Mitch McConnell and the rest of the Republican establishment in Washington,” Rosendale said in a statement regarding his decision.

Party time: Conservatives head to Maryland
|
The annual Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC for those in the know, is underway just outside D.C., and it’s going to draw several conservative VIPs including former President Trump
, the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.
The gathering is taking place in National Harbor, Md., through Saturday.
The event is known for being a bit wild, but it draws a lot of big names. In addition to Trump, others heading to suburban D.C., include Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) and former United Kingdom Prime Minister Liz Truss.
