An independent bid from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could cause more trouble for former President Trump rather than President Biden in a general election matchup, a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows. 

In a hypothetical three-way race, Biden pulls ahead with 39 percent support — beating Trump’s 36 percent and Kennedy’s 22 percent. Without Kennedy in the race, Biden narrowly leads Trump by 1 point — 47 percent to 46 percent, within the margin of error — in a head-to-head matchup. 

Independents are also nearly split among Biden, Trump and Kennedy, with all in the 30-percent range in the poll. 

Kennedy has also been getting normally Republican donations, despite his Democratic pedigree. 

“With minority and younger voters seeming intrigued, Kennedy, for now, enjoys the kind of demographic support his charismatic father and uncles generated decades ago,” Quinnipiac pollster Tim Malloy said in the poll’s release. 

Kennedy says he’s not interested in dropping out, and it remains to be seen whether Trump or Biden will be impacted more from the independent candidate. 

“My mission over the next 18 months of this campaign and throughout my presidency will be to end the corrupt merger of state and corporate power that is threatening now to impose a new kind of corporate feudalism on our country,” Kennedy said at a campaign rally earlier this year. 

The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) has filed a complaint against a campaign committee supporting Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s (R) gubernatorial bid, alleging a violation of state campaign finance rules. 

The DGA alleged in the complaint to the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, the state election regulatory authority, that Kentucky Values PAC made “an impermissible in-kind contribution” to Cameron’s campaign with the release of its ad, “Strong,” last week. 

The complaint alleges that the ad uses all of its b-roll footage from ads that the Cameron campaign already released. 

Kentucky Values is an unauthorized campaign committee (UCC), meaning it receives contributions and makes expenditures to support a candidate without any authorization from that candidate. The committee must make its expenditures independently of the candidate’s campaign and cannot coordinate in any way. 

But the ad “Strong” appears to have the same footage as that from three ads that Cameron’s campaign released previously, entitled “Tough,” “Campaigning with Daniel Cameron” and “On The Trail With Daniel Cameron.” 

The complaint alleges this violates state election regulations in limits on contributions to a candidate and a prohibition on corporate contributions to the candidate. UCCs are not subject to the state’s contribution limits and can accept corporate contributions but must only make independent expenditures. 

“Kentucky Values repackaged Cameron’s campaign ‘b-roll’ footage into an ‘independent’ ad consisting entirely of campaign material. Such a blatant republication of a candidate’s campaign material constitutes an in-kind contribution, in an amount that not only exceeds contribution limits but uses illegal corporate funds to do so,” the complaint states. 

RGA national press secretary Courtney Alexander told The Hill that the complaint is “frivolous and baseless” and is “wasting the time of Kentucky taxpayers.” 

“This shows how desperate the DGA is to distract from the real issues in this race. If the DGA paid a legal team to draft this complaint they should be asking for their money back,” Alexander said.
