Stefanik: Cheney is ‘looking backwards’

Newly elected House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) on Sunday admonished her predecessor, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), for “looking backwards.”

Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” asked Stefanik for her reaction to a clip of Cheney arguing that the GOP cannot be “dragged backward” by former President Trump’s “very dangerous lies.”

“She is looking backwards,” Stefanik responded. “Republicans are looking forward. We are unified. And we are talking about conservative principles. President Trump is an important voice in the Republican Party. We are working as one team.”

Stefanik said voters believed in “President Trump’s results.”

“Whether it was the economic growth, whether it was the historic accords in the Middle East, whether it was being tough on China or the bipartisan coronavirus relief packages, these were significant results that helped everyday Americans,” the New York congresswoman said.

Cheney was removed from her post as House Republican Conference chairwoman last week after spending months pushing back on Trump and his false claims that President Biden’s election win wasn’t legitimate. House Republicans then voted to install Stefanik into the position with backing from Trump.

Bartiromo asked Stefanik if she expected to be able to gain back a majority for House Republicans in the midterm elections, noting the GOP needs to gain only a handful of seats to do so.

“When I go home to my district and as I talk to my colleagues, this is the case across the country. Voters want to make sure that they have faith in our election system, which is why election integrity and election security is a top priority for the American people,” Stefanik said.
