Clyburn: GOP is ‘losing its way on all fronts’
House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) on Sunday slammed the Republican Party, saying the GOP is “losing its way on all fronts” while pointing a finger at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Clyburn responded to remarks made by McConnell last week when the Kentucky Republican said that 100 percent of his focus is standing up “in opposition to what the new Biden administration is trying to do to this country.”
When asked by host Jake Tapper what those comments mean for bipartisanship in the Senate, Clyburn blamed McConnell for the current posture of the Republican Party.
“Mitch McConnell has some personal animus toward Democrats that ought not be. We are one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Let’s operate like that. This Republican Party is losing its way on all fronts, and Mitch McConnell is contributing to that in a big way,” Clyburn said.

Clyburn also said the Republican Party is “showing so much dishonor” amid the intraparty battle surrounding House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (Wyo.).
Multiple GOP lawmakers are calling for Cheney’s ouster because of her stance against former President Trump and want to elevate Rep. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) to the Republican leadership position instead.
“The Republican Party today is showing so much dishonor to the people who made it possible, the people who, down from Abraham Lincoln, kept this party alive on the basis of anti-slavery, which itself was a big lie, and now they’re perpetuating it,” Clyburn said.
He added that the push to force out Cheney from her post is “the classic cancel culture.”
“Now, they talk a lot about cancel culture. This is the classic cancel culture. They are perpetrating that which they argue that they are against,” Clyburn said.
