Hunter Biden says he is ‘100 percent certain’ he will be cleared of wrongdoing in tax investigation

Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, said in a new interview that said that he is “100 percent” certain that he will be “cleared of any wrongdoing” in a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into his taxes.

Hunter Biden told CBS News correspondent Tracy Smith that he is “cooperating completely.”

“I am absolutely certain, 100 percent certain that at the end of the investigation, that I will be cleared of any wrongdoing,” Hunter Biden said, adding that “all I can do is cooperate, and trust in the process.”

Hunter Biden last year confirmed that the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware was investigating his taxes.

“I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” he said in a statement in December.

Then-President-elect Biden said in December that he had not discussed the federal investigation with any attorney general candidates.

The Associated Press, citing an unidentified source familiar with the DOJ’s investigation, reported last year that a subpoena was issued seeking documents from Hunter Biden related to the Ukrainian gas company Burisma.

It was not clear at the time whether investigators were seeking information on Hunter Biden’s work with the company or assessing his sources of income.

Hunter Biden joined Burisma’s board in 2014 while his father was serving as vice president under former President Obama and was the administration’s point person for Ukraine policy. A report by Senate Republicans last year found no evidence that Hunter Biden’s work had a direct impact on Ukraine policy at the time.

Hunter Biden told CBS News that he did not believe he “made a mistake in taking a spot on the board,” but he said that he “made a mistake in terms of underestimating the way in which it would be used against me.”

“All I know is that not one investigative body, not one serious journalist, have ever accused, has ever come to the conclusion that I did anything wrong, or that my father did anything wrong,” he said.

Hunter Biden in the wide-ranging interview also addressed his history of substance abuse. He recalled a period following the 2015 death of his brother, Beau Biden, when he was binge-drinking vodka, CBS noted.

Hunter Biden also recalled one interaction with his father, who was vice president at the time it occurred.

“So he kinda ditched his Secret Service, figured out a way to get over to the house,” Hunter Biden said. “And I said, ‘What are you doin’ here?’ He said, ‘Honey, what are you doing?’ I said, ‘Dad, I’m fine.’ He said, ‘You’re not fine.'”

He also discussed his history of drug addiction, telling CBS that “I spent more time on my hands and knees picking through rugs, smoking anything that even remotely resembled crack cocaine.”

“I probably smoked more Parmesan cheese than anyone that you know, I’m sure, Tracy! I mean, I went one time for 13 days without sleeping, and smoking crack and drinking vodka exclusively throughout that entire time,” he continued.

The interview comes days before the Tuesday release of Hunter Biden’s book “Beautiful things.”
