Sunday shows preview: Budget resolution clears path for $1.9 trillion stimulus; Senate gears up for impeachment trial
Congress has passed a budget resolution that clears the way for President Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus plan, and the Senate is gearing up for the impeachment trial of former President Trump.
Both topics are expected to dominate this week’s Sunday talk shows.
The House on Friday voted 219-209 to pass a budget resolution that would allow Democrats to pass a version of Biden’s coronavirus stimulus plan without Republican support.

The upper chamber voted 50-50 to pass the budget, with Vice President Harris casting her first tie-breaking vote in her No.2 position. The House passed the resolution later Friday.
The vote now clears the way for Democrats pass a stimulus bill that includes the hallmarks of Biden’s proposal. Both Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who will appear on “State of the Union” and CBS’s “Face the Nation,” urged lawmakers this week to “go big” on coronavirus stimulus.
However, senators signaled during Thursday debate that changes would likely be made.
The upper chamber, for instance, approved an amendment that would apply a more targeted approach to the next round of stimulus checks.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who will appear on CNN’s “State of the Union” urged colleagues to support people making $75,000 per year or less getting payments, as well as couples making up to $150,000 per year.
Amid the Congress’s actions to address the health and economic crises, the Senate is also preparing to kick off Trump’s impeachment trial this week. The former president was impeached last month for his role in inciting the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.
The House impeachment managers, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) formally requested Trump testify under oath during the trial, a call that several GOP senators have criticized.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who will appear on “Face the Nation,” dismissed the request as a “political ploy,” and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who is expected to be on “Fox News Sunday” has dismissed the trial overall as “illegitimate.”
The events at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and Trump’s subsequent bipartisan impeachment in the House have created divides within the Republican party as some, including Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wy.), have been critical of the former president and his role in the attack.
House Republicans voted by secret ballot on Wednesday 145-61 to keep Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wy) in her leadership post after she voted to impeach Trump, and several county GOP committees around the country have sought to censure lawmakers who have voted to impeach the former president.
Cheney will appear on “Fox News Sunday.”
