Sunday shows preview: America braces for next month of pandemic

Governors, officials from the Trump administration and business leaders will make the rounds on the Sunday morning show circuit this week, as the country prepares next steps to tackle the effects coronavirus pandemic.

Govs. Mike Dewine (R-Ohio), Larry Hogan (R-Md.), Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.), Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) and Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) will all make appearances on the airwaves.

Dewine, whose stay-at-home order expired on May 1, will appear on ABC’s “This Week.”

Hogan and Whitmer will both appear on CNN’s “State of the Union.”  Murphy and Reeves will appear on “Fox News Sunday.”

Hogan has outlined a roadmap to reopening for Maryland, but said this week that the state hadn’t met the benchmarks in terms of case count, deaths and hospitalizations needed to begin the reopening process.

Michigan state government officials including Whitmer on Thursday were met with armed protestors inside the state’s capitol building in Lansing while the legislature debated extending extending pandemic precautions.

The legislature did not vote to extend the precautions, and later in the day, by executive order, Whitmer extended Michigan’s state of emergency and disaster declaration until May 28.

CBS’ “Face the Nation” talk to several business leaders on the airwaves, including Daniel O’Day, chairman and CEO of Gilead Sciences, the company that produces the antiviral drug Remdesivir.

During clinical trials, the drug has proved to be a promising treatment against COVID-19. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday said that the experimental drug will receive an “emergency use authorization” because of its promising preliminary results.
