Sunday shows preview: 2024 heats up after Trump conviction; Israel-Hamas war intensifies

Former President Trump’s first campaign stop last week since his guilty verdict in the hush money trial took him to Arizona, a key swing state that went to President Biden in 2020 by less than half-a-point.

The now-convicted former president was in the Manhattan courtroom most of last month and is heading out on the campaign trail to make up for lost time as November inches closer.

The general election countdown is on, and it will likely be a focus of this Sunday’s talk shows.

Trump has yet to announce his running mate, though he confirmed a shortlist in February. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), has emerged as one of the top choices for Trump and is set to join Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Vance will likely speak about his allegiance to Trump and weigh in on the hush money trial that made him the first former president with a felony conviction. The Ohio Republican was among the political figures who attended the trial so he could be a “friendly face in the courtroom.”

Another one of Trump’s rumored vice-presidential picks is South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R). Noem will join CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she will likely talk about her continued support for the former president, who backed her during swirling controversy around a story in her upcoming memoir about shooting her dog.

While Trump rallies voters in Vegas and urges them to vote by mail and use early voting options, an idea he contested and claimed rigged the last election against him, Biden is dealing with his own campaign-related issue: the Israel-Hamas war.

The president spent much of the weekend, and Thursday, in France to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Biden celebrated the news that four Israeli hostages were rescued alive Saturday.

The continued negotiations for a cease-fire will likely also be a highlight of the Sunday talk shows since Israel has shown no signs of slowing down its counteroffensive, even after Biden announced there was an Israeli-led proposal for a pause in fighting.

Despite growing international calls for a cease-fire, Biden said the U.S. “won’t stop” until all hostages are returned and a deal between Israel and Hamas can be reached.

Cindy McCain, the executive director of the United Nation’s World Food Program, is set to join CBS’s “Face the Nation.” She will likely speak about the growing humanitarian concern for the people of Gaza, after warning last month that there is a “full-blown famine” happening.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan is set to appear on CNN’s “State of the Union” where he is expected to speak about the Biden administration’s continued efforts to reach a deal with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After Biden announced the three-part plan, Netanyahu said conditions for ending the war have not changed, meaning the hostages must be released and bodies returned for a cease-fire to happen.
