Explosion at Maryland apartment building injures at least 10

At least ten people were injured, some critically, after a Maryland apartment building exploded and burst into flames on Thursday morning.

Three people were seriously hurt and seven others had moderate or minor injures, Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said at a news conference, according to NBC Washington. All the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, the outlet reported.

Several people are also unaccounted for, according to Goldstein, but it’s unclear how many at this time.

Three out of six buildings in the Friendly Garden Apartments complex were declared unsafe following the incident, NBC Washington reported. The apartment complex in Silver Spring is located just outside of Washington, D.C.

The fire tore through apartment units following an enormous boom around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, NBC Washington reported. In video footage shared by the news organization, firefighters could be seen battling an enormous blaze that appeared to have caused extensive damage to at least one building.

The fire was mostly out by Thursday afternoon, Goldstein said, according to local outlet WTOP, but about 100 people have been displaced from their homes.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich tweeted that he was at the scene Thursday afternoon and expressed his sympathies for the victims of the “horrible and tragic event.”

“We are going to do everything we can to get to the bottom of this and help those in need,” Elrich wrote.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) tweeted that his team had been in contact with Montgomery County officials and Maryland agencies.

“Please keep all those involved, including our first responders, in your prayers,” Hogan wrote.
