Five Phoenix police officers wounded in standoff at home

Five officers were wounded in Phoenix on Friday as police responded to reports of gunshots fired inside a home, with four officers being shot while attempting to carry a baby to safety.

The suspect was found dead inside the home and a woman was also found critically injured, the Phoenix Police Department confirmed to The Hill. The baby is unharmed.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said all five officers were recovering, though one was “seriously hurt,” according to The Associated Press. He said a suspect shot one of the officers, the first to arrive on the scene, “multiple times.”

“This is just one more example of the dangers that officers face every day keeping us and our community safe,” Williams said, according to the AP. “If I seem upset, I am. This is senseless. It does not need to happen and it continues to happen over and over again.”

The Phoenix Police Department responded to a shooting at a home near 54th Avenue and Elwood Street at 2:15 a.m., according to a statement on the incident.

“As one of our officers approached to help, a suspect immediately opened fire, striking the officer multiple times. That officer was able to get away to safety,” police said.

An adult male then came out of the home with a baby and placed the infant on the ground. The man was detained by police. But “as officers went to bring that infant to safety the suspect fired from inside the home again — striking four other officers,” police said.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home, according to police. When officers secured the scene, the suspect was found dead inside the home and the woman critically injured.

Just after 9 a.m., police wrote on Twitter that the “barricade situation has been resolved” and said there was no longer a threat to the public.
