9 dead in ‘mass-casualty traffic collision’ in North Las Vegas
A car crash in North Las Vegas involving six vehicles on Saturday left nine people dead and at least one person in critical condition.
According to local authorities, the crash occurred around 3 p.m. when a Dodge Challenger traveling “at a high rate of speed” crashed into multiple vehicles. Witnesses reportedly said that the Challenger ran a red light.
It is unclear if the driver of the Challenger, who is among those who died, was impaired in any way.
“We have not seen a mass-casualty traffic collision like this before,” Alexander Cuevas, public information officer for the North Las Vegas Police, said on Saturday, according to ABC News.
Overall, 15 people were involved in the crash, according to Cuevas, who described it as a “chaotic event.”
Cuevas added that the ages of the victims range from juvenile to middle-aged. The coroner’s office will be releasing their identities.
Some vehicles were reportedly pushed into vacant lots around the intersection where the crash occurred.
