Chiefs fans donate more than $300K to Buffalo hospital after playoff matchup

After the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly beat out the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs on Sunday, Chiefs fans decided to donate more than $300,000 — and counting — to a local hospital in New York, turning a victory into an act of charity.

About 15,800 fans have donated more than $312,000 to the Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, according to a Thursday tweet from the hospital staff. The donations are $13 each, representing the 13 seconds it took for the Chiefs to tie up the game on Jan. 23.

The Chiefs won the game 42-36 in a heartbreaking loss for the Bills in the playoffs.

A Facebook group called Chiefs Kingdom appears to have launched the donation movement to honor the close game.

But fans also wanted to match the spirit of the Bills Mafia, a fanbase for the Buffalo football team known for fundraising and charity, ESPN reported.

The children’s hospital tweeted that it was “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of donations.

“Despite a heartbreaking loss Sunday night, our hearts are warm this morning waking up to $13 donations coming from fans! Thank you all so much, your support helps ensure great care for the kids and families in WNY,” the hospital said.
