Alabama man arrested, charged with assaulting officers on Jan. 6

Authorities have arrested and charged a man for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol. 

According to a Department of Justice (DOJ) statement on Tuesday, Christian Matthew Manley of Birmingham, Ala., was arrested by authorities on Oct. 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. 

According to court documents, video captured the 26-year-old Manley in the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol approaching the archway entrance of the building. 

Manley could be seen spraying pepper spray at officers from the U.S.Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department who were defending the entrance. 

Manley then threw an empty pepper spray canister at officers and brought out a second spray canister to continue his attack on authorities. 

Manley was then seen accepting a metal rod from another rioter that he threw at officers, the DOJ said in its statement. 

His arrest comes as federal authorities have arrested and charged more than 840 individuals in connection with the deadly riot, which disrupted a joint session of Congress that was in the process of counting the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election. 

Manley is facing charges stemming from engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, civil disorder, and assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers. 

Manley made his initial court appearance in Alaska on Tuesday, and his detention hearing is scheduled for Oct. 21, the DOJ noted.
