Woman indicted for setting fire to a 7-Eleven during George Floyd protest

A St. Louis woman has been indicted for setting a 7-Eleven on fire during a protest in the days after George Floyd’s killing last year.

Nautica Turner, 26, appeared in federal court Wednesday for the charge of conspiracy to commit arson, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Missouri. 

Turner’s indictment charges that on June 1, 2020, she and others conspired to damage a 7-Eleven store in St. Louis and that she and the other conspirators took part in destroying and looting the building, according to the press release. 

“The indictment further alleges that Turner poured an ignitable liquid on the 7-Eleven building, ignited a box and threw the box in the building, and that Turner committed other acts,” the press release states. “This offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and or a fine of $250,000.”

While many of the protests sparked by Floyd’s death were peaceful, major cities across the U.S. were economically impacted by the destruction of property. Vandalism and looting that took place amid the protests last year reportedly led to $1 billion in damages.
