Salt Lake City police said that University of Utah defensive back Aaron Lowe was shot dead at a house party on Saturday night, ESPN reported.

Officers responded to a call around 10:30 p.m. about a noise complaint at a house party in the the city’s Sugar House neighborhood, according to ESPN. Authorities received a second call around midnight about a fight involving a weapon at the same residence.

SLCPD said that Lowe died on the scene of the shooting, adding that a woman was rushed to a nearby medical facility in critical condition after being shot.

Lowe, 21, was starting his third season at Utah, appearing in the Utes’ first four games this season, ESPN reported.

“We are devastated to hear about the passing of Aaron Lowe. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron’s family and friends, along with the other individual who was harmed in this tragic incident,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement.

“Aaron was a great teammate, friend, brother and son and was loved by anyone who crossed paths with him. He will be deeply missed,” he added.

Lowe was recently his school’s recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship, which was created to honor the Utes’ running who died last December at the age of 19.

Jordan and Lowe were high school teammates at Mesquite High School in Texas. Lowe switched his jersey number from No. 2 to No. 22 to honor Jordan, ESPN reported.

In a tweet, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) shared his condolences on Lowe’s death.

“Abby and I mourn with our @UUtah family and friends at the tragic passing of Aaron Lowe this morning,” Cox said. “Our prayers are with his family at this terribly difficult time.”
