Almost 1 million remain without power in Louisiana

There are almost 1 million people still without power in Louisiana, days after Hurricane Ida pummeled the state.

More than 983,000 people in Louisiana and more than 31,000 in Mississippi are without power due to damage from the storm, according to poweroutage.us, as temperatures in the region are expect to hit or pass 90 degrees for the next several day.

Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane, with at least six known deaths so far attributed to it.

More than a dozen people have had to go to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning as residents rely on generators for power.

DEMCO, the energy company covering the area, said it could take weeks for all Louisiana residents to get their power back.

“Though we would love nothing more than to restore power to all members at this time, without repairs to transmission and transformer poles, that isn’t possible. Also until damaged infrastructure is repaired, we cannot begin to replace distribution poles and lines and estimated times of restoration are not possible,” DEMCO wrote. 

“Our message is that this will be a weeks long process and members should make plans now for their health, safety and comfort,” the company added.
