A sleep-away camp in New York has reported that 31 of its campers, all of whom are unvaccinated, have tested positive for COVID-19.
Camp Pontiac, located two hours from New York City in Copake, wrote in an email to CNN Thursday that the first positive diagnosis came on July 16.
“The initial outbreak was on the girls side but the latest new cases are on the boys side,” Jack Mabb, Columbia County Department of Health Director, told CNN. “The bulk of the cases came as a result of testing that was done with symptomatic campers this past weekend.”
Of the 550 campers at Camp Pontiac, about half are 7 to 11 years old, and half are between 12 and 17.
All of the infected campers are under the age of 11. So far, none of the camp’s vaccinated campers, aged 12 and up, have returned a positive test. Only four campers who are of the appropriate age to be vaccinated have not done so, CNN reports.
None of the camp’s 275 staff members have tested positive for the virus. Fewer than 10 are unvaccinated.
No COVID-19 vaccines have been approved for use in children under 12, although the Food and Drug Administration told NBC News last week that they could get emergency authorization for use in children under 12 years old as soon as early- to midwinter.
