NBA’s Timberwolves dedicate game ball to Floyd family after Chauvin verdict

The Minnesota Timberwolves dedicated their game against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday to the family of George Floyd after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in Floyd’s death.

During a post-game press conference, Timberwolves guard Josh Okogie said the team was dedicating the game ball to Floyd’s family.

“We had the game ball, we’re dedicating that to George Floyd’s family,” Okogie said. “So, I’m glad we’re able to do that.”

His remarks came just hours after Chauvin was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25 death, which sparked months of nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice.

After the verdict, the Timberwolves said they hoped the decision “will serve as a step forward, but it does not ease the physical and emotional pain that continues in an environment where systemic racism exists.”

“To our BIPOC community, the Timberwolves and Lynx remain committed to influencing change, promoting impactful action, and using our platform to help heal and unite in pursuit of liberty and justice FOR ALL,” the team said in a statement.

Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns said after the game that even though many are praising the verdict, the emotional pain of Floyd’s death persists.

“Just because justice was served today for Mr. Floyd, doesn’t mean that we’re going to be bringing him back home, and that’s the most unfortunate part of all of this,” he said.
