Former Kansas City Chiefs coach charged with felony DWI in crash that injured 5-year-old

Prosecutors in Missouri have charged a former assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs with felony DWI following a crash in February that severely injured a young girl.  

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office filed the felony charge Monday, which stated that coach Britt Reid “operated a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, and acted with criminal negligence by driving at an excessive rate of speed,” according to ESPN. 

The February crash involved three vehicles: Reid’s and two others that were parked on the side of the road. One of the cars Reid struck had run out of gas on an off-ramp and had called family members, who came in another car, for help. 

While the two cars were on the side of the road, Reid’s vehicle reportedly collided with the car that ran out of gas before rear-ending the second car, which contained a 5-year-old girl who suffered a severe brain injury. 

ESPN reported a blood test after the crash recorded Reid’s blood alcohol concentration to be at .113, citing a police probable cause statement. Reid admitted to investigators he had “two or three drinks” along with prescribed Adderall before the crash, police said. 

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said in a statement her office “will vigorously pursue these charges, and Reid is not receiving any favorable treatment from Kansas City police or the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.”

Reid is the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Britt Reid was the team’s linebackers coach at the time of the crash, after which he was placed on administrative leave. His contract was not renewed this year.
