Truck carrying radioactive uranium compound crashes, closing North Carolina highway

A truck carrying radioactive uranium crashed in North Carolina on Wednesday, closing a major highway for hours as emergency units took to the scene. 

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on I-95 highway in Cumberland County, N.C.

The truck crashed into a commercial vehicle and a passenger van. 

The truck was carrying uranium hexafluoride, which is used to make fuel for nuclear power plants, according to North Carolina State Patrol officials. 

No one was reported hurt in the crash, but local Highway Patrol personnel had to evacuate drivers and move them away from the scene. 

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told the ABC affiliate that the crash is not believed to be a threat since there was no breach of containment.
