10 dead in Colorado supermarket shooting

Ten people died including a police officer in a shooting at a Boulder, Colo., supermarket on Monday, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said Monday evening.

Police said 51-year-old Eric Talley, who had been on the Boulder police force since 2010, died in the shooting. He was among the first police officers to respond to the scene. Television footage showed a line of law enforcement members saluting as Talley’s body was being driven away from the scene in a police escort of an ambulance.

A suspect in the shooting is in custody and is currently being treated for injuries, police said. 

A live television feed showed a man being led away by police from the scene, handcuffed, partially naked, with his leg bloodied. Police would not confirm if the person being led away in the video was a suspect.

Maris added that the “complex” investigation would take “no less than five days to complete.”

Authorities said they would not yet reveal details of a motive of the shooter. They also did not reveal the weapon that was used or any possible connection between the gunman and the supermarket or the people who were shot. 

No court appearances have been set yet for the suspect, and authorities deflected questions on whether any charges were pending.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty told reporters that the investigation will be a coordinated effort between local, state and federal authorities. 

The Boulder Police Department tweeted Monday around 2:30 p.m. MDT that there was an active shooter at the King Soopers grocery store on Table Mesa, which is about two miles from the University of Colorado Boulder campus.

Aerial footage of the parking lot captured by CNN affiliate KMGH showed a massive police response in the parking lot of the shopping center where the store is located.
