Fundraiser for Atlanta shooting victim’s sons nears $3M

Randy Park

A fundraiser for the sons of one of the victims in last week’s Atlanta shootings has raised nearly $3 million on GoFundMe with almost 73,000 people donating.

Hyun Jung Grant, 51, was among the employees fatally shot at Gold Spa. Her son, Randy Park, originally hoped to raise $20,000 with the page, but donations currently total almost $2.8 million.

“She was a single mother who dedicated her whole life to providing for my brother and I. It is only my brother and I in the United States,” Park wrote. “The rest of my family is in South Korea and are unable to come. She was one of my best friends and the strongest influence on who we are today. Losing her has put a new lens on my eyes on the amount of hate that exists in our world.”

In an update on Friday, Park wrote that the money was “a change in my life.”

“I don’t know how any word I write here will ever convey how grateful and blessed I am to receive this much support. Sharing and listening was more than enough thank you so much. And to those of you that have donated any amount of money. To put it bluntly, I can’t believe you guys exist,” Park wrote.

“Thank you everyone and please share whatever care and kindness you have shown here to anyone you know that feels scared or unsure about the world we live in. I can’t help but feel selfish for all the attention this has garnered. Thank you everyone so much,” he added.

Five other Asian women were killed in the shooting, sparking a national outcry against violence toward Asian Americans.

On Saturday, demonstrators gathered in Atlanta to mourn the victims of the attack. Crowds help up signs that read “Stop Asian Hate” and “Stop Asian Hurting.” Newly elected Georgia Sens. Jon Ossoff (D) and Raphael Warnock (D) were also present at the rally.
