Woman shot inside Capitol dies
A woman who was shot on Capitol grounds during Wednesday’s violent pro-Trump riot has died, a D.C. Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson confirmed to The Hill.
NPR reported Wednesday evening that the woman was shot by a senior Capitol Police officer. A law enforcement source told the outlet that the woman was unarmed.
The woman was reportedly shot in the chest and was in critical condition when she was taken away from the Capitol.
Fox 5 DC later identified the victim as Ashli Babbit of San Diego, saying she was a 14-year Air Force veteran.
The chaos on Capitol Hill on Wednesday afternoon quickly turned violent, with rioters breaking down windows and doors in order to get into the Capitol building. Multiple lawmakers and groups urged President Trump to tell the rioters to halt their actions and leave without engaging in more violence.
Trump initially tweeted out two statements calling on the rioters to remain “peaceful” minutes after they entered the Capitol.
In a video posted soon after, he told the rioters to “go home.”
But he went on to say: “We love you. You’re very special. You’ve seen what happens. You see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace.”
Several Democratic lawmakers, blaming Trump for the incident, have called for the president to be removed from office, either through impeachment or the 25th Amendment.
