DC police release bodycam footage of officer fatally shooting 18-year-old

Washington, D.C., police released body camera footage of a shooting by an officer Wednesday night that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Deon Kay. 

According to a police statement Wednesday night, officers were responding “to investigate a man with a gun.”

The nearly 11-minute body camera footage shows officers getting out of their vehicle and running toward Kay, who is also running from officers. One officer shouted “don’t move” moments before Kay was shot. 

The officer was identified as Alexander Alvarez, who has been with the force since 2018. Police said the officer saw Kay draw his gun and he fired once. A gun was recovered from the scene. 

The video shows Kay falling to the ground as another officer renders aid. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

“Look. You don’t say anything to anyone,” an officer can be heard saying as they requested a union representative. 

At a Thursday news conference, Police Chief Peter Newsham said Kay was a “validated” gang member who has had previous run-ins with police. 

The incident is under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the police department’s internal review board.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser offered counseling services from the city to Kay’s mother. 

“We are very sorry for her loss,” Bowser said. “She has our condolences.”
