NBA star Westbrook announces positive COVID-19 case

Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook announced on Twitter he has tested positive for COVID-19 before his team’s departure to the NBA “bubble” environment in Orlando.

Westbrook, along with teammates James Harden and Luc Mbah a Moute, did not travel with the Rockets to Orlando.

The point guard thanked fans for their well wishes and encouraged them to wear masks.

“I’m currently feeling well, quarantined, and looking forward to rejoining my teammates when I am cleared,” he said. “Please take this virus seriously. Be safe! Mask up!” he wrote.

On Sunday, Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said he hoped all three of the players would be able to join the team within three or four days and complete a mandatory 48-hour quarantine before practicing with the team, per ESPN. He said the players were working out at home.

Twenty-two teams have players and personnel in the NBA’s bubble and have begun practicing, with games slated to begin July 30. Multiple players have opted out of the season altogether. 

The Rockets are expected to make a run in the eventual playoffs, and D’Antoni said Sunday he is optimistic that his star players’ delayed arrivals will not impact the team’s chances, according to ESPN.
