Connecticut confirms death of 6-week-old baby linked to coronavirus

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D) on Wednesday confirmed that a 6-week-old baby had died from complications related to the novel coronavirus, marking the state’s first pediatric death attributed to the disease.

Lamont said officials believe the state’s fatality is among the youngest anywhere amid the pandemic.

“This is a virus that attacks our most fragile without mercy,” Lamont tweeted. “This also stresses the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to other people. Your life and the lives of others could literally depend on it. Our prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”

The newborn from the Hartford area was brought unresponsive to a hospital last week and could not be revived, Lamont tweeted.

Testing confirmed Tuesday night that the baby was positive for COVID-19, he added.

Lamont announced an additional 429 infections and 16 new fatalities at a Wednesday press briefing, bringing the state’s total confirmed cases above 3,500 and death toll to 85.
