Florida teen faces felony charge after allegedly threatening to conduct a school shooting

A Florida teen is reportedly facing a felony charge after threatening to conduct a school shooting.

The 16-year-old girl was allegedly so annoyed with the sounds from a group chat of sixth graders that she took her sister’s phone and typed in the chat: “Next person to say something is the first person I will shoot on the school shooting that will take place this Friday,” she allegedly confessed to Altamonte Springs police, according to The Associated Press.

Several parents later reported the threat to officials at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School, the AP reports.

While detectives concluded the teen wasn’t actually planning on committing the attack, a written threat to kill or to conduct a mass shooting is a felony according to Florida state law, police said.

The news comes a day after another Florida police department arrested a teen in Volusia County who they said made threats to fatally shoot seven people at school on a video game chat using a fake name. The teen’s mom insisted her son was joking, but police said the written threat warranted an arrest.{mosads}

Earlier this week, a 25-year-old man from Daytona Beach, Fla., was arrested after he allegedly texted his ex-girlfriend that he was planning a mass shooting.

Dozens of people have been arrested in connection with threats to commit mass shootings or acts of violence in the aftermath of two deadly massacres in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, earlier this month.
