Dayton mayor assigned extra security following verbal spat with Trump

Dayton, Ohio, Mayor Nan Whaley (D) was reportedly assigned an around-the-clock security detail after she and President Trump traded barbs in the aftermath of a shooting in her city that claimed nine lives.

The Dayton Daily News reports Whaley was given a two-person team of police detectives for six days after the spat with Trump.

She was reportedly subject to angry and harassing phone calls, messages through social media and emails, prompting the increased security. It was the third time Whaley has required added protection.

{mosads}“This is the most extensive security I’ve ever had,” Whaley told the news outlet. “They are here for my safety, and if they think it’s important, then I think it’s important.”

After Trump visited the city on Aug. 7 to meet with victims of the shooting, he accused Whaley and Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) of “totally misrepresenting what took place inside of the hospital.”

Whaley and Brown gave a press conference after Trump left the city in which they said Trump had been “comforting” and the victims were appreciative of the visit but added that some in the community had reservations about it.

Whaley said Trump’s tweets “did a disservice” to his trip and that his visit was “difficult on the community.”

The news outlet reports the added security has since been scaled back but Dayton police did not disclose further details.

“We cannot reveal what type of security has been or will be provided,” a police spokesman said.
