Boebert, Colorado Republicans push recall effort against state official after Supreme Court’s Trump ruling

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and a group of Colorado Republicans threatened Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) with a recall effort after the Supreme Court shut down the state’s attempt to bar former President Trump from the primary ballot.

A letter from Boebert and the other Republicans says Griswold “failed” when the high court ruled against the state, “creating a stain on our Republic and an outright embarrassment to Coloradans and Americans.”

“Instead of fulfilling her oath of office to encourage Coloradans to make their voices heard, she abused her office for selfish political decision to rig the primary election against President Donald J. Trump,” Boebert wrote.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Colorado can’t remove Trump from the ballot under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause, saying states don’t have the authority to do so. The Colorado Supreme Court argued Trump should be disqualified because of his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

Griswold advocated for the effort in Colorado, initially filed by a group of voters, attracting criticism from conservatives who viewed it as political interference in the election process.

The letter was signed by Boebert, Colorado Republican Party Chair Dave Wiliams, state party Vice Chair Hope Scheppelman and GOP Secretary Anna Ferguson.

The group would need 621,000 signatures to order a recall vote for Griswold under state law. It is unclear if the group intends to circulate a petition, though Boebert listed a petition on her campaign site that redirects to a fundraising platform.

Griswold said she was “disappointed” in the Court’s 9-0 ruling against Colorado on Monday.

“Colorado should be able to bar oath-breaking insurrections from our ballot,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Trump celebrated the development, calling it a “BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!”
