Former DNC chair: Fani Willis ‘showed bad judgment’ as prosecutor

A former chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) blasted Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) for her “bad judgement” as a prosecutor over her alleged relationship with the top prosecutor overseeing former President Trump’s criminal case in Georgia.

“I can’t sit in judgment of her as a human being, but I can say, in terms of her role as a public prosecutor, yeah, she showed bad judgment,” Donna Brazile told The New York Times in an interview, speaking of Willis.

Brazile also noted that she kept a “a bright red line” between her own personal life and professional life. She said that Willis, as a woman of color, faced “vitriol” and “racial animus,” but added that some attention was to be expected when charging the former president in a high-profile case.

“She is undergoing public scrutiny — she’s a public official,” Brazile said, adding it “comes with the territory.”

Willis, who charged Trump and 18 others in an election interference case last year, has faced intense scrutiny over an alleged romantic relationship with the top prosecutor in Trump’s Georgia criminal case. She acknowledged a “personal relationship” with special prosecutor Nathan Wade earlier this month, according to court documents.

The revelation of the alleged relationship could affect Trump’s criminal case in Georgia. The former president has called the case and Willis “severely compromised.” Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the election interference case, said Monday that Willis’s relationship “could result in disqualification.”

There will be a hearing Thursday weighing allegations by Trump and some of his co-defendants that Willis’s relationship constitutes a conflict of interest.

Fulton County prosecutors have argued that the defendants are bringing forward the claims to garner media attention.

“The defense was not bringing new facts. The defense was not bringing you law. The defense was bringing you gossip,” special prosecutor Anna Cross told the judge in a recent proceeding.

The Hill has reached out to Willis’s office for comment.
