The California Legislature has voted to officially designate May 4 as “Star Wars Day,” The Associated Press reports.

California State Assembly member Tom Daly (D) introduced a resolution calling for the declaration.

{mosads}According to the resolution, the official declaration is intended to “recognize the Star Wars franchise upon the celebration of the opening of ‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’ at the Disneyland Resort.”

The resolution described the park as “largest single site expansion to date of Disneyland Park.”

The May 4 date is a nod to the phrase made popular by the “Star Wars” film series: “May the force be with you.”

“ ‘May the Fourth be with you,’ which started as a pun warmly shared by fans, has become a full-fledged fan celebration of Star Wars,” the measure states, and “The Walt Disney Company has fully embraced the spirit of May the Fourth fandom that makes the day so special.”
